More Relevant Results: Google or Bing?

Remember when Bing launched its recipe results? Now Google has launched a similar feature with recipe rich snippets. "For example, if you were searching for an easy to make thai mango salad, you can now see user ratings, preparation time, and a picture of the dish directly in search result snippets," explains Google. It may not be incredibly far-fetched to suggest that maybe Bing's offering nudged such a feature into development, whether or not Google would admit this.

This story isn't about recipes though. It's about the major search engines' quest for gaining or keeping you as a user. It feels like Bing has been around quite a while now, but in reality, it hasn't even been out for a year. Right out of the box, Bing seemed to make Google want to improve. Google is even in the process of testing redesigned search results pages that borrow some design characteristics from Bing.

Where are You Getting the More Relevant Results?

Both Google and Bing still have their relevancy issues. We recently looked at an example of a query for "matt cutts" on Google (though we compared them to Yahoo rather than Bing, as Yahoo mentioned the same query in a blog post). Frankly, Google's results left a bit to be desired. It wasn't that that they were bad exactly, but personalized results pushed the more relevant results further down the page, and Matt's Facebook profile was MIA, despite Facebook being one of the most popular sites on the web, a good result for a search on a person's name (It was in the first few on Yahoo's results).

Microsoft may like consumers to think that Bing gives all the right answers. Those commercials would certainly seem to suggest they have a leg up over the competition in that regard, but they've got their own relevance issues. For example, for an article I was writing recently, I was looking for that site Bing has that showed all of the latest features they've released. I couldn't remember the name of it, so I searched (on Bing) for "latest bing features". Given Bing's philosophy of wanting to provide answers, I would expect to easily find what I was looking for through such a query, but instead the first organic result is an article called "The Latest News from Bing" from November of 2009.

Design Web Friendly It is inexperience than can make you want to use every bell and whistle, every feature and every new trick. It is nice to be able to create complex frames and tables, use large busy fonts, use flash and animated GIFs, but will end up with too many features competing against your message. It's more than likely your audience is quickly going to be overwhelmed, rather than impressed. Just because you can create a flashy effect, doesn't mean you should. Ask yourself if the flashy addition is improving my page, my design. Decide if there is actual value in the addition and does it add with this technique? Is this the best way to communicate my message? A simple design doesn't necessarily mean uninteresting and dull.

Lots of people confound fancy effects with effective communication. Keeping it simple means you should think about how people will be using your pages. Then present your information to them so it matches their requirements and expectations. Earn their attention Use technology and effects where appropriate and where they make for more effective communication. You're not designing web sites for yourself to look at. You're publishing a web page because you expect someone to stop by and visit it - your audience. The more you know about and understand your audience, the more effective you can gear your communication and marketing appropriately on your site. Does your audience still use dial-up service that still relies on slow modems? Then be aware of file sizes and download times. Are they expecting to hear your band's music clips? Then you'd better think about an audio format. Ease of use is critical in web design,

so above all else your site easy to navigate. Many small factors can quickly add up to create easy paths through your site. For example, one thing you can do is keep the number of choices small, that way people are less likely to become lost in a long list of options. Simple in design is simple design. Did you know that the average human mind sees five or fewer items as one group, but when it encounters more than five items it has to divide them into smaller sub-groups to process them? It makes sense, then, to try to keep your selections arranged in groups of five or less. That makes it easier for your readers to quickly see the options and select one.

Web Design: The Decline of the Homepage

More and more customers are going straight to specific pages on your website, rather than the homepage.

In 2003, 39 percent of the page views for a large research website were for the homepage. By 2009, it was down to 19 percent. In one month in 2008, of the 70,000 page views a technology site received, 22,000 were for the homepage. For the same month in 2010, of the 120,000 page views the site received, only 2,500 were for the homepage.

Another technology website had roughly 10 percent of page views for the homepage in 2008, and by 2010 it was down to 5 percent. One of the largest websites in the world had 25 percent of visitors come to the homepage in 2005, but in 2010 only has 10 percent.

People don't vaguely browse on the Web. When was the last time you arrived at Google and said to yourself: "I just don't know what to search for. Someone give me a word." As Web usage matures, it becomes more specific.

Years ago people might have thought about getting to the homepage and then figuring out where to go on the site. Now they will use search or external links to get closer to the place they really want to get to. So, for example, people are becoming less likely to simply type "Toyota" into a search and more likely to type "Toyota recall".

Many marketers and communicators think their homepage is a giant billboard or megaphone. They become obsessed with its redesign and with placing lots of happy talk and smiling faces on it. That's part of the reason customers are avoiding the homepage. They don't see it as useful.

Have you ever bought a book from Amazon because of an ad you saw on its homepage? Have you ever bought a book from Amazon because of the "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought" feature? Both are marketing techniques. The first is megaphone old school print and TV marketing. The second is web marketing.

Marketers and communicators have got to let go of the idea that they control the message or the customer. Not on the Web you don't. What customers love most about the Web is the fact that it puts them in control. That's why the Web is so popular. Search is not a passive activity; it is an active, directed activity. Clicking on a link is like following a sign post. You have a destination in mind. And people are looking for the shortest way to get to that destination.

Top Ten Mistakes in Web Design

Since my first attempt in 1996, I have compiled many top-10 lists of the biggest mistakes in Web design. See links to all these lists at the bottom of this article. This article presents the highlights: the very worst mistakes of Web design. (Updated 2007.)

1. Bad Search

Overly literal search engines reduce usability in that they're unable to handle typos, plurals, hyphens, and other variants of the query terms. Such search engines are particularly difficult for elderly users, but they hurt everybody.

A related problem is when search engines prioritize results purely on the basis of how many query terms they contain, rather than on each document's importance. Much better if your search engine calls out "best bets" at the top of the list -- especially for important queries, such as the names of your products.

Search is the user's lifeline when navigation fails. Even though advanced search can sometimes help, simple search usually works best, and search should be presented as a simple box, since that's what users are looking for.

2. PDF Files for Online Reading

Users hate coming across a PDF file while browsing, because it breaks their flow. Even simple things like printing or saving documents are difficult because standard browser commands don't work. Layouts are often optimized for a sheet of paper, which rarely matches the size of the user's browser window. Bye-bye smooth scrolling. Hello tiny fonts.

Worst of all, PDF is an undifferentiated blob of content that's hard to navigate.

PDF is great for printing and for distributing manuals and other big documents that need to be printed. Reserve it for this purpose and convert any information that needs to be browsed or read on the screen into real web pages.

3. Not Changing the Color of Visited Links

A good grasp of past navigation helps you understand your current location, since it's the culmination of your journey. Knowing your past and present locations in turn makes it easier to decide where to go next. Links are a key factor in this navigation process. Users can exclude links that proved fruitless in their earlier visits. Conversely, they might revisit links they found helpful in the past.

Most important, knowing which pages they've already visited frees users from unintentionally revisiting the same pages over and over again.

These benefits only accrue under one important assumption: that users can tell the difference between visited and unvisited links because the site shows them in different colors. When visited links don't change color, users exhibit more navigational disorientation in usability testing and unintentionally revisit the same pages repeatedly.

400 Dead As Earthquake Rocks China

China's Qinghai province was hit with a magnitude 6.9 earthquake Wednesday morning, killing at least 400 and injuring more than 10,000 as rescue efforts continue.

The initial quake was centered in the southern part of the mountainous province, near the Tibetan border in Yushu County. It was followed by multiple aftershocks, and rescue efforts have been hampered by telecommunications issues as phone lines in the area have been affected.

In an interview with state television broadcaster CCTV, which was reprinted in an April 14 Associated Press (AP) report, local news deputy Karsum Nyima described the disaster.

"In a flash, the houses went down. It was a terrible earthquake," he said. "In a small park, there is a Buddhist tower and the top of the tower fell off. ... Everybody is out on the streets, standing in front of their houses, trying to find their family members."

Michael Bristow of BBC News reported that soldiers, doctors, and other emergency personnel had already been deployed into the remote area, and that "the rescue effort seems to have gotten up and running quite quickly."

The original earthquake's epicenter was located 235 miles south-southeast of Golmud, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, and was located at a depth of six miles. Ten minutes later, the aftershocks began, with a magnitude 5.3 quake being followed in close proximity by a 5.2 temblor. A 5.8 magnitude earthquake was also reported later in the morning.

This is the latest in a series of strong earthquakes to occur within the last month. Last week, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit Indonesia, and only a few days before that, a 7.2 magnitude quake effected Mexico and parts of the western United States.

Apple’s patent confirms that the giant is venturing into the small screen 3D world.

A camera can also be mounted on the glasses so a live stream of anyone approching the wearer can be displayed. The patent was first filed in August 2008 but plans fell apart only to be brought back to life.

Apple was not available to comment on this report.

Incidently, Sharp corporation is working on 3D for mobile devices and this might cross lines with any of the mobile 3D plans Apple might have. A user might choose to use his Sharp cell phone as a 3D device while there are no reports if Sharp intends to make 3D glasses to enhance a user’s experience.

I can already imagine having those 3D glasses on and playing Battlefield 2! Now thats a game!

A Google Tablet Could Be Good News for Adobe

As Ashlee Vance and I report in a Monday article, Hewlett-Packard, Acer, Microsoft and a suite of other companies are hard at work on products that they hope will be iPad killers.

Apple will most likely swat at most of these companies like a short-tempered old man whacking mosquitoes on a hot summer night. But when it comes to Google’s coming slate computer, it might take more than a swat.

As we reported in the story:

Eric E. Schmidt, chief executive of Google, told friends at a recent party in Los Angeles about the new device, which would exclusively run the Android operating system. People with direct knowledge of the project — who did not want to be named because they said they were unauthorized to speak publicly about the device — said the company had been experimenting in “stealth mode” with a few publishers to explore delivery of books, magazines and other content on a tablet.

Mr. Schmidt didn’t stop there. He acknowledged that “Google might not get it right the first time,” and said that Apple probably wouldn’t either, briefly alluding to some better features coming with the second generation of the iPad. But he said both companies would have “the next two to three years to figure it out.”

According to a guest at the party, Mr. Schmidt offered one other piece of information: the Google device will run Adobe Flash content and games.

This is good news for Adobe, but not for Apple.

Apple dealt a major blow to Adobe last week when it refused to allow iPhone applications into its App Store that were built with Adobe software tools.

Report: Google testing desktop Google Voice

Google continues to evolve its Google Voice product, with reports it's testing a desktop-based version inside the Googleplex.

TechCrunch says that Google has been internally testing a Desktop Google Voice Application this week, the fruits of its acquisition of Gizmo5 last year. This would allow Google Voice users to treat their PC or Mac like a phone, bypassing the current requirement that Google Voice service be connected to a phone.

It's not clear when such an application may launch, according to TechCrunch. Skype is probably the most recognizable name in this space, although VoIP clients such as Gizmo5's old product aren't exactly novel. Google's edge could be the blend of Web services it already offers integrated into its product.

Reality Check for Web Design

"The power of the Web is in its universality. Access by everyone regardless of disability is an essential aspect."

Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web, recognized that universal access is a critical Element of Good Design.

The Web's landscape has altered dramatically since its inception, when many websites completely ignored users with disabilities.

"Most project managers assumed that blind people could not use the Web anyway, so therefore they also could not use the specific website that was being developed," said Web usability guru Jakob Nielsen.

"We have now eradicated this misunderstanding, and most Internet managers do know that they have to care about users with disabilities."

Despite progress, websites today are still three times harder for users with disabilities to use than for other users.

"In most projects, accessibility has fairly low priority because project managers underestimate the number of people who are impacted by design problems," Nielsen said. "They think that they are just losing a handful of customers, whereas in fact they may be turning away millions of customers, especially among senior citizens, who constitute a big and rich group that's getting more and more active online."

Now, a new software product allows developers to check pages for compliance with usability guidelines as they code.

The software, "LIFT-Nielsen Norman Group Edition," or LIFT NN/g, works with Macromedia Dreamweaver (4.0 or MX) on both Windows and Macintosh.

LIFT NN/g checks to ensure that websites are compliant with the World Wide Web Consortium's accessibility guidelines and Section 508 guidelines.

"The new software basically makes it easier to be a Web designer and to remember the guidelines for users with disabilities," Nielsen said. "Instead of relying on having the designer remember every single guideline at every single step of developing the website, we are offloading the memory burden onto the computer, which is very good at staying alert and checking for a lot of details all the time without getting tired."

The Nielsen Norman Group created guidelines by conducting user tests and observing a range of users (including those who were blind or had poor vision or motor-skill challenges) interacting with a variety of websites.

The software alerts developers of any possible violations of these guidelines. A fix wizard automatically repairs broken tables, images, scripts, cascading menus and other glitches. A JavaScript Analyzer avoids common errors. A monitor checks work as it's completed, so mistakes are fixed before they are perpetuated on multiple Web pages.

Hundreds of pages can be processed in just a few minutes, saving hours that would otherwise be spent coding by hand.

"The main benefit is that the computer doesn't get tired; thus, it will check every design detail for every single guideline all the time," Nielsen said. "Also, the software has a simple link from any occurrence of a potential usability problem to the relevant research material that explains why it's an issue and what questions to consider when deciding whether to keep or fix the questionable design element.

"This is much faster than having to look up the answer in a book, and in fact it's a great example of the original promise of hypertext."

The software goes beyond merely focusing on accessibility to promote usability and improve the Web user experience for everyone.

"Technical accessibility is not enough to make a website easy to use," Nielsen said. "The real question is whether users can get what they want from a website in a reasonable amount of time and whether the visit is pleasant for them. Users with disabilities are humans and need easy and simple user interfaces just like anybody else."

"Making websites more accessible can go beyond the benefits to people with disabilities," agreed Doug Bowman, network design manager for Terra Lycos (Terra Lycos is Wired News' parent company). "Accessibility measures also make good business sense.

"The Web is just as much a public space as our downtown office buildings and suburban shopping malls. By not being aware of, or taking the time to implement, common Web accessibility measures and guidelines, we are -- as website producers -- essentially hiding the elevators, ramps, handrails and wide doors which welcome anyone into our virtual buildings and help them find their way or move from place to place."

But while the software automates many core usability and accessibility solutions, humans must ultimately decide whether a design has a usability problem.

"As with all usability, it is based on the need to create good human interaction, so it is important not to take the human out of the design process," said Jason Taylor, senior product manager for UsableNet.

The LIFT NN/g software works like Microsoft Word's grammar check, allowing designers to check fundamentals that are sometimes missed due to busy schedules and tight deadlines. But like grammar, usability doesn't always follow strict conventions.

"While it's helpful to know when you've gone outside those normal, recommended practices, automated software could misguide someone with less experience in Web accessibility if they follow every suggestion," Bowman said.

The cost of the software, available at UsableNet for $549, could be prohibitive for some small websites.

"I don't see smaller companies happily forking over another $550 for accessibility software when they really haven't yet been educated on the benefits of making their websites accessible," Bowman said.

What's more, some larger companies use other HTML editors besides Dreamweaver for designing and managing websites.

The LIFT NN/g software is just one of the evaluation, repair and transform tools that can be used in conjunction with more complex websites serving environments used by large websites.

Developers can also check the accessibility of their website free of charge using a tool commonly known as "bobby", which checks for compliance with the basic W3C standards.

"Large, dynamic database-driven sites often use complex scripts and serving environments to pull together content from multiple sources, then compile it into HTML," Bowman said. "Website design may begin in an editor like Dreamweaver. But the final HTML churned out by a content management system may leave out some of the accessibility-checked code from Dreamweaver."

Despite these drawbacks, software producers and designers agree that any improvement in accessibility for people with disabilities will also make it easier for other Internet users to navigate the Web.

"Over time, these tools become educational in nature," Bowman said. "Repeated reminders of what could be done can eventually become ingrained and lead to common practice."

Opinion: HTML 5: Less than it's Cracked up to Be

The core idea behind HTML 5, the latest proposed version of the Web's foundation markup language, is to make all resources, not just text and links, widely and uniformly usable across all platforms. Well, that was the theory. In practice, things aren't going to change that much from today's Web, with its reliance on proprietary media formats and methods.

In the 20 years since HTML appeared, companies -- including Adobe with Flash, Microsoft with Silverlight and Apple with QuickTime -- have added their own proprietary media formats to the Web. In addition, other businesses -- such as Google with Gears and Oracle/Sun with JavaFX -- have created technologies for the Web that make it possible to create offline and user-side-based Web applications. This is all fine, but these proprietary formats and application platforms get in the way of the universal use vision for the Web.

The W3C's (World Wide Web Consortium) plan was to answer these proprietary approaches with HTML 5. This open standard, yet to be fully approved, takes HTML from simply describing the basics of a text-based Web to one that includes specifications for presenting animations, audio, mathematical equations, offline storage and applications, typefaces and video. In short, HTML 5 is meant to incorporate all the functionality that Web users now expect from proprietary add-ons.

As Ian Hickson, one of the editors of the HTML 5 standard, has said, "One of HTML 5's goals is to move the Web away from proprietary technologies such as Flash, Silverlight, and JavaFX." At the same time, according to Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the founder of the Web and director of the W3C, "Yes, HTML 5 is still a markup language for Web pages, but the really big shift that's happening here -- and, you could argue, what's actually driving the fancy features -- is the shift to the web becoming a client-side computing platform." As for each of the multiple elements that are now being incorporated into HTML 5, Berners-Lee continued, "We've had the pieces for a while," and bringing them together in HTML 5 "multiplies the power of each one."

Sounds great, doesn't it? But HTML 5 is years away from becoming a real standard. Indeed, Dave Story, Adobe's vice president of developer tools, has pointed out that "the HTML 5 time-line states that it will be at least a decade before the evolving HTML 5/CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) 3 efforts are finalized, and it remains to be seen what parts will be implemented consistently across all browsers. In the meantime, the Flash platform will continue to deliver a ubiquitous, consistent platform that enables ever richer, more engaging user experiences."

And, even when HTML 5 does kick in, so what? Take the newly approved HTML 5 draft's codec-neutral video tag. In theory, this will make it easier to embed multimedia content in Web pages. In practice, it's not so easy. That's because HTML 5 doesn't spell out which codec should be supported by the video tag.

So, for example, YouTube and Vimeo are already supporting the HTML 5 video tag with the H.264 video codec. But, while H.264 isn't a proprietary codec in the same way that Adobe Flash is, it does come encumbered by patents.

The same is true with other potential codecs. Even the open-source favorite Ogg Theora isn't completely clear of patent issues. In any case Polaris Pool Cleaner Parts, though, the problem of a universal Web video format standard is simply being shifted from the HTML standard to where it already lies: the Web browser creators. In other words, we're just stuck with the same-old, same-old when it comes to Internet video.

It's not just video, though. HTML 5 will also include several features that address building Web applications that work while offline. These will include support for a client-side SQL database and offline application and data caching. Again, that sounds great. But while Google, for example, is switching its Google Gears offline functionality to HTML 5's approach, it isn't stopping with just that. Instead, as former Google open Web advocate Dion Almaer said, "Gears is always going to be a superset of HTML 5." And, of course, as a superset, that means that even if a browser did support all of HTML 5, it still might not work with a Google Gears-based offline application.

Get the idea? Sure, everyone is in favor of HTML 5, but the devil is in the details. For the foreseeable future, the Web is going to stay the way it is now: a mix of open standards with the most interesting parts locked away by exclusive or proprietary formats or methods.

Office 2010 Beta

You might be wondering, “Wait, isn’t this supposed to be an article about alternatives to Microsoft Office?” Well yes, however the Office 2010 Beta is currently a free download. Sure, at some point this year it will probably self-destruct and Microsoft will force you to buy it, but that is no reason not to take advantage of the temporary freebie.

In fact, Office 2010 is very good and stable in its Beta form. Microsoft wisely replaced the ugly Office button with the File menu, so many users making the switch from older versions will be in for less shock. There are also some newer options for copying and pasting that help preserve formatting more effectively. But don’t get too attached—at some point the software will leave Beta and you will have to pay up.

Download or Cloud? Free Alternatives to Microsoft Office

Unless you are an Office devotee there are plenty of Microsoft alternatives that will get the job done. While Zoho and Google Docs do a great job of keeping your work stored in the cloud, you may have to consider if you want to rely on an Internet connection to get work done (there are options for working offline, but it’s still not as seamless as keeping files on the desktop). OpenOffice.org is an excellent option, though it won’t do everything that Office can.

In the end it may mean a combination of choices—using Google Docs or Zoho for online collaboration, and OpenOffice for desktop work. Either way, you will find there are plenty of free choices for getting work done.

Apple's Much-Hyped iPad Hits Shelves

Newest Gadget Arrives after Weeks of Hype and Frenzied Speculation on Whether Device Will Measure Up

After weeks of hype and frenzied anticipation, Apple's iPad finally hit the shelves.

Apple Inc. began selling its much-anticipated iPad on Saturday, drawing eager customers intent on being among the first owners of a new class of tablet-style computers.

Apple must convince people who already have smart phones, laptops, e-book readers, set-top boxes and home broadband connections that they need another device that serves many of the same purposes. But the scores of people who waited in long lines across the country Saturday seemed willing to buy first and discover all its uses later.

Wired magazine tech writer Steven Levy told CBS News correspondent Manuel Gallegus that Apple wants to "create an entirely new category … a brand new category that's different than the computer, that's different than the phone, that's something in the middle."

He said Apple's goal is to make us change the way we think about computers. "It has a talent," Levy says, "for simplifying what could be very complicated and making it beautiful and boiling it down to the essence of what do we want to do with it."

Beth Goza has had iPhones and other smart phones, along with a MacBook Air laptop, yet she believes the iPad has a place in her digital lineup. She likened it to a professional tennis player owning different sneakers for grass, clay and concrete courts

"At the end of the day, you can get by with one or the other," she said outside an Apple store in Seattle's University Village mall. But she's already dreaming up specific uses for her iPad, such as knitting applications to help her keep track of her place in a complicated pattern.

Granted, Goza is a self-described nerd - she says she was the first person in Seattle to get the also-hyped Segway personal transporter - but not everyone who braved the blustery early morning was a typical early adopter.

Danita Shneidman, a woman in her 60s, said she isn't particularly tech-savvy, yet she already knows what she's going to use the iPad for first: looking at photos and videos of her first grandchild, born this week in Boston.

And then there's Ray Majewski, who went to an Apple store in Freehold, N.J., with his 10-year-old daughter, Julia. The iPad is partly as a reward for her straight A's in school, and partly a present for himself.

"I like the electronic books, and my daughter is really getting into them as well," Majewski said. "I was thinking of getting a Kindle (e-book reader) but then said to myself, 'Why not get an iPad because I can get so much more from that than just reading books?"'

The iPad is essentially a much larger version of Apple's popular iPhone, without the calling capabilities. The new device is a half-inch thick, weighs 1.5 pounds and has a touch screen that measures 9.7 inches on the diagonal - nearly three times the iPhone's. Also like the iPhone, it has no physical keyboard.

For now, Apple is selling versions of the iPad that can only connect to the Internet using Wi-Fi. Those models start at $499. Versions that also have a cellular data connection will be available by the end of the month. They will cost $130 more, with the most expensive at $829.

In Apple stores in Seattle and on New York's Fifth Avenue, the atmosphere was festive, with employees cheering and clapping as customers entered and left.

Once the initial iPad excitement settles, though, Apple may have to work harder to persuade a broader swath of people to buy one. Many companies have tried to sell tablet computers before, but none has caught on with mainstream consumers. And while early adopters who pre-ordered an iPad in recent weeks have gushed about all the ways they hope to use it, skeptics point to all the ways the iPad comes up short.

They argue the on-screen keyboard is hard to use and complain that it lacks a camera and ports for media storage cards and USB devices such as printers. They also bemoan the fact that the iPad can't play Flash video, which means many Web sites with embedded video clips will look broken to Web surfers using Apple's Safari browser. And the iPad can't run more than one program at a time, which even fans hope will change one day soon.

College student Brett Meulmester stood in line at an Apple store in Arlington, Va., to try one out without buying one yet.

"The cost is kind of prohibitive at this point," he said.

For others, cost was clearly not an issue - nor convenience, it seemed. Siggi Manz, a software developer who lives near Frankfurt, Germany, was spending just 20 hours in New York to snag one. Manz, who already carries Apple's MacBook Pro and iPhone, said the iPad would be ideal for note-taking.

"Opening a laptop is sometimes impersonal because the monitor is between us, and the iPhone is too little to really honestly type," Manz said.

James Stuart trekked to Seattle from Canada, where the iPad won't be on sale for another month - too long, in his mind.

"It's like a gorgeous woman - you just want to touch it," he said.

In San Francisco, tattoo artist Max Ackermann is convinced the iPad will "define a giant change in how we perceive computers in general."

Yet Ackermann admits he has no clue exactly how, saying, "It's definitely in its baby years."

Intel, Nokia Open MeeGo To Developers

Intel and Nokia have opened up the source code of the MeeGo Mobile Operating System to outside developers.

To date, MeeGo comprises a Linux kernel and OS infrastructure up to the middleware layer. What's available has been placed in online repositories made available Wednesday to open source developers, Imad Sousou, director of Intel's Open Source Technology Center, said on the MeeGo community blog.

Images of the infant OS were also released for Nokia's ARM-based N900 smartphone and for netbooks based on Intel's Atom processor. These images lack a user interface, so are only suited for developers.

MeeGo is the combination of two Linux-based OSes, Intel's Moblin and Nokia's Maemo. Working with the open source community, the two vendors hope MeeGo will become a major OS for mobile devices. The companies envision MeeGo devices eventually competing with smartphone platforms from Apple, Google, and Research in Motion.

However, Intel and Nokia also see MeeGo being used in many devices beyond smartphones. The two companies have partnered with the Linux Foundation in developing an architecture based on a common core that will work across different usage models, such as netbooks, handheld and in-vehicle devices, and connected TVs.

The core comprises various key subsystems, including the core operating system libraries, the communications and telephony services, Internet and social networking services, visual services, media services, data management, device services, and personal services.

Intel and its partners plan to release a finished version of MeeGo in May. Third-party applications will be available for MeeGo devices through Intel's AppUp Center, an online store that will also be open to consumer electronics makers.

Acer, Asus, Dell, and Samsung were the first to partner with Intel in the store effort. They plan to launch their own branded stores based on the AppUp Center client software, which is needed to access the store.

Having an online application store attached to mobile devices is pivotal to their success, analysts say. That's because third-party applications extend the capabilities of the devices. As an example, Apple's success with the iPhone is due in large part to the popularity of the company's App Store.

Webs Taps Facebook Connect for Log-Ins, Sharing

A small change to site builder Webs could have a big impact on Facebook's news feed. At least that's what the company is hoping.

Webs (formerly FreeWebs) on Tuesday is rolling out a new way for users to add Facebook Connect log-ins and content sharing to their sites. The site-building and Web-hosting service says it has more than 55 million users, and churns around 300 million page views a month. And by integrating Facebook Connect, the company expects to make those numbers bigger.

Webs has long had a way for users to sign up their own users, however this required those users to log in with their Webs ID. The new system lets you use Facebook Connect instead. A site owner just needs to sign up for a Facebook Apps API key, then link it up with their Webs account. In return, their users get all the usual Facebook Connect perks, like being able to carry over their Facebook profile picture and other information to that Webs site profile. And whatever comments they leave, along with content on those Webs pages, can be shared back through their Facebook news feed.

The one area where Webs can really tap into this is in making a content page that highlights some of the most shared items, or just a feed of what's being shared across its content network. WordPress does this to some degree with its editor-curated "Freshly Pressed" section, but I imagine it would be a fair bit more interesting to see what's surging based on the wisdom of the crowds.
